Through my work in Congress, the media and Morning Joe, I have been fortunate enough to enjoy food from some of the finest restaurants in the world. Without a doubt, the Fish House is the go-to place on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Every time I am in Pensacola, I make it a point to stop by and eat at the Fish House — they are in a league of their own.
The Fish House, Atlas Oyster House and the Deck Bar all occupy a handsome, sprawling waterfront location on the bay just a couple blocks off Palafox Street. Chef Shirley’s award winning signature Grits à Ya Ya are creamy and redolent of smoked gouda.
Come one, come all, come hungry, and come at 11 am to witness the calm before the lunch storm. By noon the Fish House is packed with professionals, power players, and poseurs. The wide-ranging menu of fish dishes is the bait, and each can be served in a variety of ways: ginger-crusted, grilled, blackened, pecan-crusted, or Pacific-grilled, which puts any dish over the top. The attentive service, bay-front setting, and signature “Grits a Ya-Ya” (fresh gulf shrimp on a bed of smoked Gouda-cheese grits smothered with a portobello mushroom sauce) keeps diners in the net. Steaks, delicious homemade desserts, a sushi bar, more than 300 varieties of wine, and a full-service bar don’t hurt the popularity of this restaurant either.
A favorite stop is the Fish House, located on the water in downtown Pensacola. Sit out back on the deck, and watch the fishing boats come in while you revel in their famous Grits a Ya Ya.
